Outstanding Visual Arts Program Highlights Work of Students

Central Piedmont Community College’s Visual Arts Program will feature the work of two outstanding students in the college’s Elizabeth Ross Gallery (Overcash Academic and Performing Arts Building – 1201 Elizabeth Avenue) now through August. John Clark’s art exhibit, entitled “Retrospect,” will be on display now through August 18 in the Ross Gallery. Gallery hours are 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The show is also open to the public an hour before all Halton Theater performances through intermission. A reception for John Clark will be held on August 16 from 6-8 p.m. in the Ross Gallery.

John Clark began taking watercolor classes at CPCC nearly 20 years ago after retirement. Now in his 80’s, Clark has completed every class available in the College’s visual arts program repeatedly. In addition, he has supplemented his studies with workshops by watercolor artists such as Zoltan Szabo, Ferdinand Petrie, and Joe Robinson. He has attended numerous watercolor demonstrations through the Charlotte Art League and won several awards for his watercolors. He was recently selected as one of four CPCC 2006 League for Innovation recipients.

Clark holds a BChE from Cooper Union School of Engineering and a MS from Stevens Institute of Technology. He is a World War II veteran and served as Captain in the Army Air Corps. Prior to beginning studies in the arts, he worked in the chemical industry for 50 years.

David Thayer French’s art exhibit will be on display in the Ross Gallery through July 30. Viewing times are 1:00-3:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday as well as an hour before all Halton Theater performances through intermission. French specializes in portraits having studied painting, drawing, and sculpture. He received an Associate of Arts degree at CPCC and continues to take classes to hone his skills as an artist and life-long learner. French has used charcoal for more than seven years. He also has been involved in numerous mural projects, including the CPCC mural recently completed at Irwin Creek Greenway.

Central Piedmont Community College is the largest community college in North Carolina, offering 100 degree and certification programs, customized corporate training, market-focused continuing education, and special interest classes. CPCC is academically, financially and geographically accessible to all citizens of Mecklenburg County. In 2002, the National Alliance of Business named CPCC the Community College of the Year for its response to the workforce and technology needs of local employers and job seekers through innovative educational and training strategies.
