College Celebrates Earth Day with a Host of Campus Activities

Global minded nations are under pressure to find sustainable, renewable, alternate sources of energy and emerging technologies. Central Piedmont Community College’s Futures Institute, Campus Ecology Program, and Student Life organization have organized Earth Day 2007 to help students, faculty and the community discover ways to be part of the solution. A combination of educational conservation documentaries, respected speakers, and organized student service learning projects with Global Youth Services Day are designed to help CPCC students, faculty, staff, and the community gather timely information about today’s energy concerns. Events will take place on all CPCC campuses now through April 24. (attached is a flyer outlining each of the events)

The community is invited to attend a special showing of the documentary, Kilowatt Ours: A Plan to Re-Energize America, on Thursday, April 19th at 7 p.m. in the Tate Hall (Overcash Building – Central Campus) – press release attached. This new documentary is designed to help consumers cut their energy bills and improve the quality of the environment. This acclaimed film advocates energy conservation methods and clean, renewable power sources available as alternatives to the high cost of energy. Following the film, June Blotnick, Director of Carolinas Clean Air Coalition, will lead a discussion. The Carolinas Clean Air Coalition was founded in 2002 to address air quality issues in the Charlotte region.

In addition, several campuses will review the award winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth over the next week. Other activities include an Adopt-A-Street project with the Levine Campus on Tuesday, April 17. At 10:30 a.m., students and faculty will clean the roads near the Levine Campus.

On Saturday, April 2 beginning at 9:00 a.m., CPCC’s National and Global Youth Service Day activities will include the Central, Levine, and Cato Campuses. At each campus, students will work on Phase I of Campus Wildlife Habitat areas by preparing designated areas and planting vegetation to attract wildlife (more information available on the CPCC website at www.cpcc.edu/earthday). These projects will create a space on CPCC campuses for students and staff to enjoy nature. Creek clean-ups on April 21 include Little Sugar Creek Greenway and Irwin Creek, near Central and Levine campuses. These projects will beautify the county’s waterways and reduce water pollution. Students working along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway will also create a garden. More than 30 University of North Carolina at Charlotte students will also participate in the project, which has been supported financially by UNC-Charlotte.
